Pianist in Kitchener - Waterloo

About Me

Sam Domzella is pursuing a master’s degree in piano performance from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas as a recipient of the Meadows Artistic Scholarship Award, studying under Dr. Carol Leone. He holds an Honours Bachelor of Music degree with a specialization in the same discipline from Wilfrid Laurier University, having studied piano with Anya Alexeyev, as well as cello and chamber music with Dr. Katie Schlaikjer. He was not particularly fond of the piano when he began playing, but he started to enjoy it at the age of 9, after he won a small scholarship at his local music festival. Now, he has taken lessons with renowned pianists from around the world, such as David Kuyken, Adrian Oetiker, Ashley Wass, Jérôme Granjon, and many others, and has performed in masterclasses taught by the likes of Jeremy Denk, Sharon Wei, David Ying, the Lafayette String Quartet.Sam is most active as a chamber musician, having the good fortune to collaborate with many of his university peers and attending chamber music programs in Ochsenhausen, Germany, and St. John’s, Newfoundland. Most notably however, Sam is a member of the Savon Duo with cellist Yvon Arseneault, performing all around Southern Ontario, including in concert with the KW Chamber Music Society. The Duo are also the founders of Savon Summer Music, an annual chamber music concert series featuring the duo and many guest musicians/artists, such as violinist Sierra Olsthoorn, vocalist Naomi Schlegel, and clarinetist Gavin Warren. He is also active as an orchestral musician, having played in the Guelph Symphony Orchestra on several occasions, and as a member of the Wellington Wind Symphony. He also works as a church musician, having most recently served as the Music Director at Trinity United Church in Elmira, Ontario for three years.Sam was the winner of the Ken Murray Concerto Competition at Laurier in 2023, affording him the opportunity to perform Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with both the Laurier Symphony and the Cambridge Symphony Orchestras. He is also a recipient of Laurier’s Faculty of Music and Ken Murray entrance scholarships, and a three-time recipient of the Dorothy M. Elliot Scholarship for Performance.
His life in music has been guided by his teachers, family, and friends both within WLU and without, who continue to be an inspiration to and support for him.

The Savon Duo

About Us

Known for their vibrant connection on stage and ability to share their love and excitement for music with audiences, the Savon Duo is a young chamber music duo from Kitchener-Waterloo. They first met in high school but only began playing together in the fall of 2024, after reconnecting during their studies at Wilfrid Laurier University. They are bound both by this shared history and a common goal to present classical music as a living and accessible artform, one full of innovative and refreshing possibilities for everyone to enjoy. In their time together, the duo has performed all around Southern Ontario, including in concert with the KW Chamber Music Society, and received instruction from such musicians as Heather Taves, Daisy Leung, Roman Borys, and the members of the Penderecki String Quartet. The duo are the founders of Savon Summer Music, an annual chamber music concert series held in various locations around Southern Ontario. The 2026 series will feature trios by Beethoven and Rachmaninoff with violinist Jaedon Daly, sonatas for cello and piano by Chopin, Prokofiev, and Bach, and a collaboration with visual artist Carol Campbell. The duo also put on a series of concerts this past Christmas, with guest clarinetist Gavin Warren, violinist Sierra Olsthoorn, and vocalist Naomi Schlegel.

- Trio Élégiaque No. 2 in D minor, Op. 9 - S. Rachmaninoff
Both pieces fit the ghostly theme, Beethoven's trio holding the nickname "Ghost" due to its eerie second movement, and Rachmaninoff's trio having been written in remembrance of Tchaikovsky. It was even inscribed with the dedication "In Memory of a Great Artist".Guest violinist Jaedon Daly will join the duo for these concerts, the details of which are as follows:- Friday, May 22, 7:30PM - Floradale Mennonite Church, Floradale- Saturday, May 23, 2:30PM - All Saints' Anglican Church, Waterloo- Sunday, May 24, 2:30PM - Knox Presbyterian Church, Guelph- Sunday, May 24, 7:00PM - Queen Street Baptist Church, St. Catharines- Monday, May 25, 7:30PM - First St. Andrew's United Church, London

Bookends

Frédéric Chopin and Sergei Prokofiev each wrote only two pieces for piano and cello, and in both cases, the first was a smaller work, relatively early in their lives, and full sonata near the end of their lives. This program will feature all four of these works, showcasing the complete works for cello and piano by Chopin and Prokofiev, and a direct comparison between their early and late compositional styles. The program will be:- Introduction and Polonaise brillante in C Major, Op. 3 - F. Chopin
- Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 65 - F. Chopin
- Ballade in C minor, Op. 15 - S. Prokofiev
- S. Prokofiev - Cello Sonata in C Major, Op. 119 - S. Prokofiev
And here are the details of each concert featuring this program:- Thursday, June 4, 7:30PM - Floradale Mennonite Church, Floradale- Friday, June 5, 7:30PM - First St. Andrew's United Church, London- Saturday, June 6, 2:30PM - All Saints' Anglican Church, Waterloo- Sunday, June 7, 2:30PM - Knox Presbyterian Church, Guelph- Sunday, June 7, 7:00PM - Queen Street Baptist Church, St. Catharines

A Century-Old ReFrain

Brahms often being considered the successor to Beethoven lends itself to a certain comparison between their works. A comparison that is invited especially between the first and last works on this program:- Cello Sonata No. 1 in F Major, Op. 5 No. 1 - L. van Beethoven
- Song Without Words, Op. 109 - F. Mendelssohn
- Cello Sonata No. 2 in F Major, Op. 99 - J. Brahms
Both sonatas are for cello and piano, and both were written in the key of F Major. However, with Beethoven's sonata being written very early in his life, and Brahms' very late, these pieces were written nearly a century apart from one another. Come here the similarities and contrasts of these works yourself, with a bit of Mendelssohn in the middle as a palate cleanser. And here are the dates/venues where this program will be played:- Thursday, June 18, 7:30PM - Floradale Mennonite Church, Floradale- Friday, June 19, 2:30PM - All Saints' Anglican Church, Waterloo- Saturday, June 20, 2:30PM - First St. Andrew's United Church, London- Saturday, June 20, 7:30PM - Knox Presbyterian Church, Guelph- Sunday, June 21, 7:00PM - Queen Street Baptist Church, St. Catharines

Modern(-ish) Folk Dances

The program will be:- Rhapsody No. 1 for Violin and Piano, Sz. 87 - B. Bartók
- Signs, Games and Messages for Violin - G. Kurtág (b. 1926)
- A Living Appendage of the Machine - A. Domzella (b. 2000)
- Violin Sonata No. 1 in B minor, Op. 21 - N. Medtner

Expectation & Reverence

Yvon will be away throughout the month of July, but to keep the music going, Sam will be joined by violinist Sierra Olsthoorn for a handful of concerts throughout the month. This program will feature a selection of sonatas and other works by German composers, specifically:- Rondo for Violin and Piano in B minor, D. 895 - F. Schubert
- F-A-E Sonata for Violin and Piano in A minor - R. Schumann, J. Brahms, A. Dietrich
- Violin Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 18 - R. Strauss
Whether it be Schubert's rondo, commissioned by a violinist contemporary of his, the F-A-E sonata, collaboratively written for the famous violinist Joseph Joachim, or Strauss's sonata, written while falling in love with his future wife, all three of these works were written with specific people in mind, all of whom were admired by the respective composers. The details for the performances of this program are as follows:- Thursday, July 30, 7:30PM - Knox Presbyterian Church, Guelph- Friday, July 31, 7:30PM - First St. Andrew's United Church, London- Saturday, August 1, 2:30PM - All Saints' Anglican Church, Waterloo- Saturday, August 1, 7:30PM - Floradale Mennonite Church, Floradale

…in the key of G…

This program will feature works exclusively in the keys of G Major and minor, by two of the greatest composers in the classical canon:- Sonata for Viola da Gamba in G Major, BWV 1027 - J.S. Bach
- Sonata for Viola da Gamba in G minor, BWV 1029 - J.S. Bach
- 12 Variations on "See the conqu'ring hero comes", WoO 45 - L. van Beethoven
- Cello Sonata No. 2 in G minor, Op. 5 No. 2 - L. van Beethoven
To keep things exciting, the duo will announce the order from the stage. This is to say, the works may not be played in the order listed above, perhaps we'll start with some Beethoven, or a few movements of Bach, it'll depend on the day!You can catch this program at the following dates/venues:- Thursday, August 6, 7:00PM - Queen Street Baptist Church, St. Catharines- Friday, August 7, 7:30PM - Floradale Mennonite Church, Floradale- Saturday, August 8, 2:30PM - All Saints' Anglican Church, Waterloo- Saturday, August 8, 7:30PM - Knox Presbyterian Church, Guelph- Sunday, August 9, 7:30PM - First St. Andrew's United Church, London
